The Challenge
The fire had caused significant damage to the stairwell across several levels, leaving behind soot, corrosion, and structural deterioration - particularly to the stairwell roof and supporting beams.
Our inspection revealed:

Paint deterioration and soot damage to internal steel beams

Surface corrosion and signs of oxidation from firefighting activity

Damage to glazing panels, lighting systems, and fire doors

Debris accumulation throughout the stairwell
The project required precision, coordination, and safety excellence, all within a live environment where disruption to the wider site had to be kept to a minimum.
Our Solution
Smart CI Group mobilised multiple teams to deliver a comprehensive, phased refurbishment plan.
Our Fire Protection division began by installing new certified fire doors across all levels of the stairwell.
Our Electrical division replaced the entire lighting system, installing modern LED and emergency lighting for improved safety and energy efficiency.
Simultaneously, our teams worked both on-site and at our Sittingbourne workshop to design and manufacture a completely new fibreglass roof structure - a complex element that required months of skilled craftsmanship.
Once structural repairs were complete, our Decorating team meticulously prepared and repainted all surfaces across the seven levels, including walls, handrails, doors, and floors, bringing the stairwell back to life with a clean, durable finish.
